Molding gives a ceiling architectural detail and can be as simple or as elaborate as the homeowner desires.

Molding can create a variety of effects. One method: Place molding two or three feet from the walls around the perimeter of the ceiling. "Then paint the molding the same color as the trim in the rest of the house," Kubli says. "You can be as creative as you want, and it gives instant architectural detail to lower ceilings."

Forgoing the coffers and paneling an entire flat ceiling with wood, like pecky cypress, redwood or mahogany, or metal plates of tin or copper, are other options.

A mural can provide unique - and almost always pricey - results. "An artist might paint a mural directly on the ceiling, or paint it on canvas first and then install the canvas," Kubli says. "It can be less expensive to do it first on canvas, and if you move away, you can take the mural with you." >>>
