The possibilities are restricted only by imagination. "Faux finishing is exciting because there are so many levels that it's virtually limitless," Kubli says. "The way the finish is applied determines the type of look you'll get, and you can use many different combinations."

Is it a job for a do-it-yourselfer? "Someone with talent can try tackling it on their own," Kubli says: "it definitely takes practice, but there are books available to help."

Applying a faux finish can be done with simple tools such as rags, brushes, sponges, trowels or plastic bags.

For a quality finish, careful surface preparation is necessary. Holes and dings must be filled and sanded before applying a base color. continued
