Sheer panels and shutters are other options. "Sheers are less casual than sunshades," Kubli says. "And shutters are a great look. They're like custom furniture for your windows."

Decorative aspects are also important. "Window treatments set the mood for the room," Kubli says.

Today, contemporary styles seem to be taking the lead over traditional and transitional window treatments. "Some people still love the traditional swags and jabots, but we're seeing a trend toward cleaner silhouettes, European-style hardware with stainless steel finishes, and glass finials," Kubli says. "Colors are becoming simpler and more subtle — ivory, taupe and pale khaki. But I have more traditional clients who still love red and gold."

Ripple-fold draperies are gaining popularity over pleats. "There's less fabric at the top, and they have a cleaner look," Kubli says. continued
