Whatever the fabric, lining can be a good idea. "People often make the mistake of not lining their draperies," Kubli says. "Lining gives them weight and body, and prevents the sun from fading the fabric. For a traditional décor, interlining gives an even heavier, more elegant look."

Trims can be a finishing touch. "Trims are like jewelry, and they reinforce the design theme," Kubli says, "Crystals and tassels are usually traditional, while wooden beads or seashell trims can be very contemporary. The variety is almost endless, and they range from very affordable to very expensive."

Whatever the style or materials that appeal, a homeowner should not underestimate the role of window treatments in the overall decor. "They're critically important, and a big investment," Kubli says. "And they can last for decades." >>>
