Custom chandeliers imbue a room with refined lighting.
A French-style decor features trompe l'oeil walls and an ornately framed mirror flanked by sconces. The gilded vanity console has a marble countertop and rock crystal basin with gold-plated fixtures.

Even the toilet can be part of the décor. “I like to coordinate the toilet with the scheme of the room,” Kubli says. “Today’s styles range from contemporary to traditional.”

Wall color is another place to be imaginative. “Color is very personal, but I tend to like more dramatic, darker colors in a powder room,” Kubli says. “I also like color on the ceiling, usually darker than on the walls. The ceiling can also be a different color than the walls—I like to use paint that has a silvery shimmer to it.”

Placing tile on the walls, either partway or all the way up, provides another kind of look. “Glass tile is beautiful, durable and easy to clean,” Kubli says. “It gives a glamorous look. It can also be very affordable in a powder room to do a mosaic on the countertop. Because it isn’t used regularly like other bathrooms in the house, keeping the grout lines clean isn’t as much of an issue.” ■
